Using a boiled egg to help us understand we learned there are 3 layers to the earth. The shell is like the Earth's crust (where we live) the next layer the white of the egg is the rocky layer of the Earth called the mantle. The center of the Earth is the yolk of the egg and is called the core. The outer core is hot liquid rock and the inner core is solid iron. All the fun was when they got to eat the layers of the Earth :-). This is something my son has been asking about...and the egg was a perfect way for him to understand. We also learned there are 7 continents and last night we were able to watch a movie called 8 degrees about sled dogs in Antartica. We learned that in Antartica no one is a permanent resident; however scientists from several countries have research stations where they will stay while researching the continent. Several countries including New Zealand have claim to territory in Antartica, but that there is a treaty held b/t 12 nations including the US which neither accepts or denies the territories claimed. To travle there you must take a cruise b/t November and March (summer months, haha...meaning it's a tad warmer) and it is VERY expensive. There is limted life in antartica and it is considered a desert. Whales and seals are the only sea life. Very few animals can survive including penguins and a few species of birds. Only lichen grows there). VEry interesting and far more to be learned there.
